Can You Switch Health Insurance Plans Mid-Year?

Usually not on a whim — but a real qualifying life event opens a window to change plans outside Open Enrollment.

The general rule: Open Enrollment only

For most Marketplace and private plans, you can only enroll in or change coverage during the annual Open Enrollment Period. Simply deciding you want a different plan mid-year usually isn’t enough on its own to make a change outside that window.

What actually qualifies you for a mid-year change

A Special Enrollment Period opens up when you have a qualifying life event, including:

  • Losing job-based or other health coverage
  • Getting married or divorced
  • Having a baby, adopting, or gaining a dependent
  • Moving to a new coverage area
  • A change in household income that affects subsidy eligibility
  • Losing eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP

Most qualifying events give you roughly 60 days from the date of the event to enroll in a new plan, so acting promptly matters — missing that window generally means waiting until the next Open Enrollment.

Switching carriers vs. switching plan types

A Special Enrollment Period lets you enroll in new coverage, but it doesn’t necessarily mean unlimited plan-hopping between carriers whenever you want. What you’re eligible to switch to depends on the specific qualifying event and what’s available in your area — this is exactly the kind of detail worth checking before assuming a switch is possible.

Short-term and supplemental coverage work differently

Some plan types — including short-term health insurance and certain supplemental plans — aren’t tied to Open Enrollment rules and can be purchased year-round, which is worth knowing if you’re stuck outside a qualifying event window.
